During the early part of the twentieth century, Ireland was involved in a conflict for independence. The effects of this struggle are still alive today.

In 1922 saw the creation of the Irish Free State. Most of Ireland became independent, while the northern section remained under British rule. This ended the practice of the Lords electing 28 representatives, and the title Viscount Galway (and Baron Killard) lost its remaining political power.
